In Japan’s cities you can pay by card or tap for most things. Here’s what to expect and how to avoid being caught out.
What’s widely accepted
- Hotels, department stores, electronics and chain stores
- Convenience stores (7-Eleven, FamilyMart, Lawson)
- Most city restaurants and cafes
- Contactless / mobile wallets in many of the above
The easiest small-payment trick
Load a Suica or ICOCA (even a mobile one in your phone) and tap it for trains, convenience stores and vending machines. It’s faster than fumbling coins and accepted almost everywhere.
When you’ll still need cash
Small independent eateries, markets, temples and rural spots may be cash-only — see how much cash to carry and where to withdraw it.
