Getting yen in Japan is easy once you know which machines take foreign cards — because many local bank ATMs don’t.
Use convenience-store and post ATMs
- 7-Eleven (Seven Bank) — in virtually every 7-Eleven, English menus, open long hours, reliably accept foreign cards.
- Japan Post Bank (Yūcho) — in post offices and many stations.
These two cover you almost anywhere in the country.
How to withdraw
- Insert your card, choose English.
- Select Withdrawal from a credit/debit/overseas card.
- Take your cash, card and receipt.
Keeping fees down
There may be a small machine fee plus your home bank’s foreign-withdrawal fee. So withdraw larger amounts less frequently rather than small amounts often. Decide your target with how much cash to bring, and put big purchases on a card.
