The 7-day plan

  • Day 1 — Tokyo: arrive, sort data and an IC card, easy evening in Shinjuku/Shibuya.
  • Day 2 — Tokyo: Asakusa, Akihabara, teamLab or a neighbourhood you love.
  • Day 3 — Hakone / Mt Fuji: hot springs and Fuji views as a day trip or overnight.
  • Day 4 — to Kyoto: shinkansen to Kyoto; Gion and Kiyomizu-dera in the afternoon.
  • Day 5 — Kyoto: Fushimi Inari, Arashiyama bamboo, temples.
  • Day 6 — Osaka: day trip or move on; Dotonbori, street food, castle.
  • Day 7 — buffer / departure: shopping (tax-free) and fly home.

Getting around

City travel is easy with an IC card and Tokyo transit. For the intercity hops, check whether a JR Pass or regional pass saves money. From the airport, see Narita/Haneda or Kansai.

FAQ

Is 7 days enough for a first trip to Japan?

Yes. A week comfortably covers the classic 'Golden Route' — Tokyo, a Fuji/Hakone side trip, Kyoto and Osaka — without rushing, using the shinkansen between cities.

Should I buy a JR Pass for this itinerary?

Maybe. For a Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka loop, compare the pass against individual fares first — see our JR Pass guide. Many 7-day first trips don't quite reach the break-even point.
